Tamale, Feb. 28, GNA – The Local Enterprises and Skills Development Programme (LESDEP) under the National Youth Employment (NYEP) module has over the past year, trained about 1,030 youth in the Northern Region.
The beneficiaries have been equipped with tools to enhance their standard of living.
The first batch of the trainees was drawn from Tamale Metropolis, Yendi, Savelugu/Nanton, Tolon/Kumbungu, and Gushegu districts.
Presenting the items to the beneficiaries in Tamale on Tuesday, Alhaji Abudulai Harruna Friday, and Tamale Metro Chief Executive (MCE) lauded the initiative of the LESDEP to complement government’s effort at giving employment to the people.
“The NDC Government made a pledge to the good people of Ghana to create jobs for the teeming youth in the country. The presentation today seeks to fulfil some of the dreams of the Government,” he said.
Alhaji Friday said the presentation of 191 equipment of various kinds to the beneficiaries in the five districts was a manifestation that the government was on course to fulfil its Better Ghana Agenda.
The MCE noted that government had put measures in place to sustain the programme saying, the “beneficiaries would be required to pay back the cost of the equipment after two years”.
Mr Mohammed Amin Adam, Northern Regional Coordinator of the NYEP said LESDEP had come to reinforce government’s commitment to the economic substance of Ghanaians especially at the community level.
He said the NYEP in collaboration with private sector organisations had in the past years trained about 68,000 youth in various vacations to make them employable.
Mr Adam noted that skill acquisition is a lifetime employment that disregards age and therefore asked the beneficiaries to make good use of their training to ensure that their lives are improved for the better.
