Tema, June 1, GNA --- A team of Police Personnel from Tema and Ashaiman, have gunned down two suspected Fulani armed robbers operating on the Tema-Aflao Highway.
Seven others also suspected to be armed robbers were arrested after they had engaged the Police in a shoot-out on the Highway at Kpone.
The bodies of the deceased are yet to be sent to the Police Hospital Morgue.
At a Press briefing in Tema on Friday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maxwell Atingane, Tema Regional Police Commander, said the two deceased suspects were yet to be identified.
DCOP Atingane told the journalists that the seven, currently in Police custody, include two Nigerians; two Ghanaians; two Fulanis; and one Togolese.
The Regional Commander said the Police Command had intelligence information that the group was planning to attack unsuspecting commuters plying the Tema-Aflao Road.
The group, he said, was monitored until about 21:30 hours on Thursday evening when the Police team mounted a check point on the road at Kpone.
DCOP Atingane indicated that the suspected robbers who were in a hired Hyundai mini bus, defied Police signals to stop.
He said instead of stopping, they opened fire on the Police team, which resulted in a shoot-out between the Police and the robbers.
He added that in the process, the two were killed, while the other seven were arrested.
DCOP Atingane said upon a search on the vehicle the robbers were using, the Police retrieved 18 rounds of BB cartridges, nine 9MM live ammunition, four mobile phones, one single barrel short gun, one jack knife, two torch-lights, a motorbike key, wrist watch and a bottle of perfume.
The Regional Commander further said a cash sum of 120 Naira, 250,000 CFA, and 9 Ghana Cedis, were found on three of the suspects,
DCOP Atingane indicated that the suspects would be arraigned before court after investigations were completed, and called on the Public to volunteer more information on the activities of criminals, giving the assurance that informants’ identities would be duly protected.
