Heartless mother in court for exposing child to danger

Kumasi, Aug 2, GNA - A 24-year-old mother has appeared before a Kumasi Circuit Court for alleged exposure of her six-month-old baby-girl to danger.

Sally Ekuba, a commercial sex worker, is said to be in the habit of leaving the little child alone in the room at night to ply her trade but not after she had administered a dose of “Akpeteshie” (local gin) laced with valium to throw her into deep sleep.

The court, presided over by Justice D.W.P. Amedior, granted her bail in the sum of GH¢5,000.00. She was ordered to re-appear on August 16.

Police Chief Inspector Fredrick Banson told the court that Sally lives at Daban-Apraman in and that her neighbour, Cynthia Agyeiwaa, reported her conduct to the police.

This was after attempts at persuading her to take good care of the baby had failed.

She would always rain insults on those who tried to talk her into giving up on her bad ways.

The prosecution said on July 23, the baby allegedly cried all night and at about 0700 hours, the next day, Cynthia, found her smeared with faeces and urine.

She washed her and assisted by members of the unit committee, took her to the Police Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVSSU).

Sally was arrested and in her statement insisted that it was only through the commercial sex trade that she could cater for her. The baby is being taken care of by one Doris Tuffour, an evangelist.
