Ghana Immigration Service to construct an eight-story headquarters

Accra, May 16, GNA - Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr Peter. A. Wiredu, Acting Director of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), on Wednesday said construction of its new eight-story headquarters estimated at about 22.5 million Ghana cedis would begin soon.
Speaking to journalists in Accra, Dr Wiredu said the project formed part of plans to uplift the image of the GIS and ensure it improved on its operations, including border patrols, which sometimes required the use of weapons.
"We contact other security agencies such as the military and the police for assistance, "he said.
Dr Wiredu said the task of protecting the country's borders required great logistical strength and expertise.
"We have 51 approved entry points, four of which are the most commonly known; Kotoka International Airport, Aflao, Elubo and Paga borders," he said.
He said it was worth noting that apart from these 51 entry points, there were other means by which foreigners could sneak into the country.
"Even the entire estimated 4,000 personnel of the GIS would not be sufficient to man every entry point in the country," Dr Wiredu said.
He said while GIS was ensuring that the country's immigration laws were respected, the assistance of the public in apprehending those who flouted these laws was most needed.
"I urge the general public to bring to our attention, any suspicious acts that indicate, that the country's immigration laws are being flouted," he added.
