International Needs Ghana assists 34 kayayei in dressmaking

Accra, July 20, GNA – International Needs Ghana (ING) a non- governmental organisation, has presented vocational kits worth GH¢15, 300 to 34 selected head porters from Accra New Town and Mallam Atta to help them acquire skills.

     The vocational kits, which included 34 sewing machines and accessories, were presented to them on Thursday in Accra as a way of helping them live meaningful lives to improve upon their living standards.

     The move was also meant to help eliminate commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) and young women who often fall prey to such vices due to the type of businesses  they found themselves in.

     Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Madam Patience Vormawor, Head Gender and Documentation stated that ING is a Christian organisation that focuses on women and children as well as the vulnerable in the society especially in rural areas.

     Madam Vormawor said ING provides education to such needy children through the provision of book and uniforms among other interventions.

     She indicated that ING presently works in 10 communities in Accra that were prone to  commercial sexual exploitation including La, Teshie, Osu, Chorkor, Madina Mallam Atta and Mamobi.

     Mrs Joyce Odame, Child Rights Manager of ING said the organisation is working in partnership with the Australia Agency for International Development (AUSAID) the main sponsors for the project.

     She said AUSAID supports the work  of her outfit through sensitisation and awareness creation programmes on CSEC.

     Mrs Angelina Kwarteng, Programme Officer ING said CSEC is dangerous and leads to sexually transmitted diseases and death.

     She admonished the young women recipients to live upright lives.

     She said ING would provide the beneficiaries with two sets of uniform each, register them with the National Health Insurance Scheme and place them in fashion homes and also pay for the  cost of training.

     Chief Moro Baba, a community leader who presented the items expressed gratitude for the gesture.

     Issah Kubura, a beneficiary of the items expressed her heartfelt appreciation to ING for the help.
