UWR Minister appeals to Peace Corp to return

 

Wa, July 20, GNA – The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, has noted that people in the region are unhappy about the recent alleged attack on two US Peace Corp volunteers that culminated in the withdrawal of all American Peace Corps in the region.
     He said the people in the region are very much concerned about the development and the Regional Security Council had met with the various security agencies on the matter for effective protection of all Peace Corp Volunteers and other foreign nationals operating in the region.
     Alhaji Sulemana was briefing Journalists in the region on the attack on the US Peace Corp Volunteers and the subsequent withdrawal of all US Peace Corp Volunteers in the region, in Wa on Friday.
     He assured all Peace Corp Volunteers and other foreign nationals that the situation had been normalized and they had no cause to worry, pointing out that, the Security Agencies would continue to do all that they could to ensure that every life in the region was well protected.
     The Regional Coordinating Council, the Regional Security Council and the various heads of the Security Agencies had agreed to intensify day and night patrols in the area to ensure maximum security for all.
     Alhaji Sulemana said the incident, though isolated was unfortunate and assured American Citizens traveling to and from the region not to be agitated about the incident because the Upper West Region is noted to be most peaceful and the safest area in Ghana.
     It would recalled that two Peace Corps volunteers, Mr. Andrew Kristler and Miss Rachel Riccardi were attacked in Wa last Saturday by some alleged armed robbers resulting in the stabbing of one Illiasu, who later died of knife wounds.
     Mr. Kristler sustained a cut on his finger and shoulder during a struggle with the assailants.
