Sunyani, Sept. 11 GNA - Five persons including an Assemblyman at the weekend died in a road accident at Terchire in the Tano-North District of Brong-Ahafo Region when returning from a wedding ceremony in Kumasi.
They were; Asare Kumi,36, Assemblyman for Tanoso in the District, Kwame Alex, 42, Nana Kwasi, 35, Emmanuel Kwame Agyapong, 37 and Guamah Obed, 30, driver of the vehicle.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anthony Appiah, Tano North District Commander of Motto, Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), told the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani that on September 8, 2012, the five on board a Kia Spectra salon car with registration number AS 6407-10 were from Kumasi to Sunyani after attending a wedding ceremony.
He said on reaching Terchire, about 20 kilometres to Sunyani, the vehicle veered off the road and hit a tree.
It subsequently broke into two and half pieces and rolled into a valley at the right side of the road.
According to the District MTTU commander, four persons died on the spot while the driver, Obed, later died at the Saint John of God Catholic Hospital at Duayaw- Nkwanta.
He said Police were still investigating the cause of the accident but said that the road was very slippery due to a day long drizzle and that might have caused the vehicle to veer off the road.
Mr Appiah advised drivers to be careful on the road especially, during rainy seasons whilst adhering to the speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour whenever they reach a town.
He observed that over-speeding had become a major cause of road accidents, saying if road traffic regulations were obeyed, “impacts of accidents will not be so serious as to lead to the loss of many lives”.
“Good drivers drive safely to their destinations but and will not over- speed to endanger people’s lives”, Mr. Appiah said.
Meanwhile corpses have been deposited at the Saint John of God Catholic Hospital’s mortuary pending autopsy
