Professor says teacher attitude crucial for better academic performance

Takoradi, June 11, GNA – Professor George Oduro, Director of the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration of the University of Cape Coast, said on Monday that bad attitude by some teachers was the key factor hampering quality education delivery.

He said cases of teacher absenteeism, ineffective lesson preparation and delivery, threatening classroom environment and other teacher-related factors affected children’s learning.

Prof Oduro was delivery a paper on the theme: “Teacher and Quality Basic Education” , to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Trinity Presbyterian School in Takoradi.

He said it was unfortunate that some teachers did not establish a connection between the training they received at the training colleges and what they practiced in the schools as substantive class teachers.

 Professor Oduro said research into activity-based learning practices in primary schools by his Institute showed that some teacher trainees approached teaching practices for the purpose of scoring higher marks for certification rather than developing skills for enhanced teaching performance.

Mr. Augustus Cleland, the Western Region Director of Education, appealed to teachers to rededicate themselves to duty by working hard to ensure that quality education was achieved.

Mr. Kingsley Oduro, head teacher of the school, said improved discipline in the school had resulted in excellent performance at the BECE.
