Youth of Sag-Baalong petition govt over dangerous bridge

Wa, July 19, GNA – The Youth of Sag-Baalong and its surrounding communities in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region have urged the Government to resume the rehabilitation of a broken down bridge, which has claimed two lives.

The people died when they tried to cross the bridge during the rainy season last year, a statement signed by two of the youth leaders, Master Patrick Bonye and Helen Gbiel, said.

The statement said the nature of the bridge, which links Sag-Baalong to other communities, also prevented pupils from going to school thus virtually giving teachers of the two basic schools automatic holidays.
It also prevented farmers from sending their farm produce to the market and denied them access to immediate health care when necessary.
They explained that the rehabilitation work on the bridge was stopped in June last year for no apparent reason.
The community therefore appealed to NGOs to come to their aid towards the completion of works on the bridge to save lives.

The youth complained that the Wa West District Assembly had excluded the Community from the Rural Electrification Project, saying it would cost pupils in the basic schools their ICT lessons.

The Assembly should, therefore, consider them for the project.
