Late President Mills' Funeral Planning Committee donates items to charity

Accra, Aug 16, GNA - The late President John Evans Atta Mills' Funeral Planning Committee (FPC) on Thursday donated some of the items it received towards the funeral to charity.
The Committee received donations from institutions, corporate organisations and individuals for the funeral and decided to give some to charity.
They included cartons of fish, 300 cartons of filtered water, 100 crates of eggs, bags of flour, crates of soft drinks, biscuits and 14 cattle.
The beneficial institutions and organisations included Help Age Ghana, Osu Children's Home, National Chief Imam, Weija Leprosarium, the Legion Village, Dzorwulu Special School, School for the Blind and School for the Deaf.
Mr Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development and a member of the Committee, who presented the items, said after the funeral it became necessary to dispose off the rest of the items in a transparent manner.
He said after using some of the items to serve visiting dignitaries and the public, there was quite number of goods left and the Committee decided to distribute the rest to charitable organisations and institutions.
Mr Afriyie-Ankrah noted that when the late President Mills was alive he even gave his salary and donations to the Osu Children’s Home and on his birthday gave donations to other intuitions and since this was his funeral, "We believe that his spirit would agree with us that this is the right thing to do".
He said in keeping with the spirit and character of the late President and the character of the current President John Dramani Mahama and the brotherly love that the Committee had decided to distribute the rest of the items to these institutions.
Mr Afriyie-Ankrah said the committee would soon inform the general public about how much was received as donations and the expenditure on the funeral.
Meanwhile, Ghana National Petroleum Tankers Union has presented a cheque for GH¢1,000 towards the funeral of the late President Mills.
Mr Eric Amoako, Chairman of the Union, said the money was their contribution towards the late President Mills' funeral.
Ms Bertha Ansah Gyan, Chief Executive of MASLOC, who received the cheque on behalf of the Committee, thanked the union for the gesture.
