BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhuanet/GNA) --The Olympic flame left the United Kingdom on Wednesday. Its historic crossing into Ireland is part of its 70-day tour in the build up to the London Games.
Irish Olympic boxing medallists Wayne McCullough and Michael Carruth received the torch at the border. The torch will be relayed to Ireland’s capital Dublin by a total of 41 bearers. Under a special permission, the torch went to the south of Ireland for a historic tour that symbolised the peace process.
The Irish tour of the Olympic torch began in Belfast on Sunday. A total of 8,000 people will carry the flame during its nearly 13-thousand kilometer 70-day journey to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London on July 27.
